As part of the 11th Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) and Funka’s Friday webinar series, we have organized a workshop where we discussed the impact of one of the most important pieces of European legislation for accessibility, The Web Accessibility Directive.

Insights from research on cognitive accessibility – May 6th, 2022

Many people struggle with websites that are difficult to understand or navigate. However, website owners are often unaware of the concrete barriers that users are facing or the possible solutions to overcome these barriers. In this webinar, the Funka research team provides insights from a recent study on cognitive accessibility that was conducted by Funka and ICF on behalf of the European Commission.

Update on the EU accessibility requirements and legislation – March 18th, 2022

Funka – EDF Accessibility Update – January 27th, 2022

During this webinar we have demonstrated the results of the Buddy project, where users with cognitive disabilities can easily find suitable tools, supported by an AI-based recommender. We have also introduced the project UPower, starting in February 2022, where we are aiming to empower end users to execute their rights when it comes to the Web Accessibility, and presented some initial findings from the ongoing review of the Web Accessibility Directive.

Accessibility in higher education – practical tools and recommendations – December 8th, 2021

Web accessibility is gaining importance as a key competence for ICT students to learn. In this webinar, we have discussed the value of web accessibility teaching at university level as well as learned about tools to use for teaching web accessibility. IAAP Nordic, Funka and partnering universities have shared insights from the development of teaching materials as part of an EU-funded research project called IWAC.

Second online workshop on cognitive accessibility – November 25th, 2021

This was the second online workshop on cognitive accessibility. It was organized as part of a study funded by the European Commission on how to improve web accessibility for persons with cognitive disabilities.

First online workshop on cognitive accessibility – June 22nd, 2021

In this first online workshop, we have exchanged experiences and insights on cognitive accessibility. The workshop was a part of a study funded by the European Commission on how persons with cognitive disabilities interact with digital information and services.

The event started with a brief introduction of the study and initial findings. This was followed by an interactive session where the participants were invited to share reflections and experiences on the consequences of websites being difficult to understand and navigate.

AI, ML and accessibility - trends, opportunities and ethics – April 23rd, 2021

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are already used to support accessibility. Research as well as businesses see a great potential, and a lot of interesting innovation is happening as we speak. How can we make sure these technologies benefit inclusion without opening up for bias or privacy issues?

In this webinar, the participants could learn more about the potential of AI and ML in the perspective of accessibility. We had presented two highly relevant research projects on the topic and discussed potential next steps with key experts. The distinguished panel contained perspectives from end users, research, and AI expertise.

Cognitive accessibility - new requirements and future legislation – March 19th, 2021

In an exciting nationally funded research project, Funka has developed and tested criteria for cognitive accessibility. The aim of the project has been to influence future legislation so that accessibility requirements better include cognitive aspects. During this webinar, we had presented the project, showed concrete examples, discussed with international experts and leaved room for Q&A. The webinar was organised in collaboration with IAAP Nordic.

Involve the users workshop – January 27th, 2021

On January 27th, 2021, Funka together with Norwegian and Finnish disability organizations has co-organized an online workshop on user involvement. It was a part of the Involve the users research project.

The interactive online workshop offered both a presentation of the project results, and interesting discussions on involvement of people with disabilities in product development and research.
