Stavanger municipality made their website accessible with BrowseAloud

The Norwegian municipality Stavanger is working very focused with making the content of their website more understandable. They searched for different options and tried several solutions on different websites. They conduced a user test and the result was very univocal, Browsealoud was the most simple and best to use option for them.

According to the users, BrowseAloud, which is a service provided by Funka, has a simple and intuitive interface, is easy to use, easy to discover and the floating interface makes it flexible for both content managers and end users.

BrowseAloud is an innovative support software that adds speech, reading, and translation to websites facilitating access and participation for several target groups, such as persons with dyslexia, low literacy, mild visual impairments and other maternal languages than Norwegian. Online content can be both translated and read aloud in multiple languages.

To serve such diverse target groups, the tool needs to provide individual settings. For example, it allows the user to change the font, size and colours of the text, as well as the voice and speed of reading.

My favourite BrowseAloud function is the on-screen text magnifyer that shows up on the top of the screen. It is not only easy to follow, but also gives great reading support. In addition it removes distractions which helps staying focused when reading, says Tone Gaard, web editor at Stavanger municipality.

Stavanger municipality is working hard on a daily basis to improve the accessibility of their information and services, with assistive technology such as BrowseAloud as one part in giving all their website visitors a better user experience.

The regulations on accessibility that were thrown upon us have certainly made accessibility a well-used concept among the ICT people. We are not yet able to fulfil all criteria, but we know what to look for and test for, which means we are increasing competence on better UX – for everyone! In Stavanger we have been working with a special focus on easy reading during the last few years, and that has resulted in knowledge that we can now use in the work with our websites, Tone Gaard concludes.
