Funka & accessibility

Funka was started in the 1990s as a joint, non-profit initiative among all disability organisations in Sweden. The knowledge, staff and technology of the non profit was turned into a privately owned company in 2000. Today, we are market leaders in the field of accessibility and enjoy a close relationship to end user organisations, which ensures a unique level of quality control in everything we do.

We have offices in Stockholm and Oslo and clients from all over the world. We are co-founders of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals, IAAP.

Funka works with accessibility in digital interfaces in regards to content, design and technology, web, information and communications technology (ICT) and documents in all possible formats, apps, ticket machines and automated teller machines (ATM), but also signs and other kinds of information.

Our activities are based on hands-on testing, experience and scientific methodology. Around 20 % of the turnover comes from financial instruments in research, and we partner with several leading universities.

Through positions of trust and work in standardisation, Funka sets standards for the development, analysis and formation of requirements in accessibility.

On behalf of the European Commission, we have, among other things, developed methodology and measured the status of web accessibility in all European Union (EU) member states, Norway, United States of America (USA), Canada and Australia.

Our experts are contributing to the work of international, European and national standardisation bodies in Sweden and Norway, for example, the European requirements for accessibility in public procurement, standard EN 301 549.

In addition to our other tasks and responsibilities, Funka has conducted the authorized translation of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, WCAG 2.0 to Swedish. Our specialists are considered to be among the world's foremost experts on web accessibility.

We are EPiServer Solution Partners, Microsoft Partners and Adobe Certified Training Providers. Through our foundation, we also run Funkaportalen, a meeting place for persons with disabilities.
