Countdown to compliance: How Funka helps you meet the European Accessibility Act
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) – Directive (EU) 2019/882, will become legally binding on June 28, 2025. That’s now less than two months away.
While some organizations have been preparing for years, many others still haven’t grasped the scope of what’s coming, or that it applies to them at all.
At Funka, we see this moment not as a final warning, but as a crucial opportunity: to support those who need help understanding their responsibilities and to guide them in creating inclusive, accessible services that meet legal requirements and user expectations.
“Some organizations have been proactive and are well on their way toward meeting the EAA. But others, who are equally subject to the law, haven’t even understood the question. With the deadline just around the corner, we want to help them get a clear picture of what’s required and how to move forward.”
— Johan Kling, COO & CQO, Funka
What is the EAA?
The European Accessibility Act introduces binding accessibility standards for a wide range of everyday digital and physical services, including:
- Electronic communications (e.g. telephony, email, video calls)
- Streaming and audiovisual services
- Online banking and digital financial tools
- Transport services (websites, apps, ticketing systems)
- E-books and reading devices
- E-commerce
- Computers, operating systems, ATMs, and self-service machines
The directive primarily targets the private sector, but many public-facing services offered by public entities also fall under its scope.
What does the law require?
To comply, products and services must follow four core accessibility principles:
- Perceivable, users must be able to perceive information.
- Operable, interfaces must work for all users.
- Understandable, interactions must be intuitive and clear.
- Robust, services must be compatible with assistive technologies.
In addition to technical requirements, organizations must document compliance, communicate accessibility features clearly to users, and cooperate with national authorities.
